NCAA: Dartmouth Head Coach Bob Whalen Retires After 36 Seasons

After 36 seasons coaching the Dartmouth Big Green, head coach Bob Whalen has announced that he will retire this week.

Whalen will head into retirement as the winningest Ivy League baseball coach at a single institution. He finishes with 653 career wins for Dartmouth. He also was the longest-tenured coach at one school in all Division One baseball.

Along with all those wins, Whalen led the Big Green to two Ivy League championships, which led to two NCAA Tournament appearances in 2009 and 2010.

In the 2010 NCAA Tournament, Dartmouth was in the Coral Gables regional and got its first NCAA Tournament win since 1987. Whalen led the Big Green against the Florida International Panthers in an elimination game, defeating them 15-8.

The long-time head coach left a closing remark on his career in a press release from Dartmouth athletics.

“The opportunity to coach at Dartmouth College has been the most meaningful aspect of my professional life. I have been fortunate to spend my entire career at such a world class academic institution that is also committed to athletic excellence,” said Whalen.

The head coach added: “I’m grateful to all the players I’ve had the privilege to coach for their commitment to the program and each other. I’m thankful to the many hard-working assistant coaches who have played a significant role in the success of the program and to the friends of Dartmouth baseball for their generosity and many levels of friendship and support. Also, thank you to Mike Harrity and his staff for all they do to help the coaches create a highly competitive and life-changing experience for all the Dartmouth student-athletes.”

This past season, Dartmouth finished 11-25 and was 8-13 in Ivy League play. They finished fifth in the conference standings ahead of Princeton, Cornell, and Brown. The Big Green were also one win shy of making the Ivy League Tournament.
