NCAA Top 25 Rankings: Major Shake-Up in Top 5

The Top 25 NCAA Division I Rankings were released on May 6 from D1 Baseball.com, with the University of Tennessee taking over the No.1 spot.

Tennessee (39-9) took the top spot, moving up two spots from No. 3. They went 2-2, taking two out of three against Florida in Gainesville and losing against Lipscomb.

Clemson (36-10) took over the No.2 spot. They went 2-1, winning two out of three against Georgia Tech in Clemson.

Texas A&M (40-8) last week’s No.1 fell two spots to No.3 after going 2-2. They beat Tarleton and lost two out of three to LSU in Baton Rouge.

The University of Kentucky (35-10) moved up four spots from No.8 to No.4. They went 2-1, taking two out of three against last week’s No.2 Arkansas (40-9) in Lexington. Arkansas dropped two three spots to No.5.

The University of Virginia (35-12) moved into the top 10 and went up one spot from No.11. They went 2-0, beating VCU and Navy.

The University of Georgia (35-12) had the most significant rise in the rankings, moving four spots from No.19 to No.15. They went 4-0, beating Kennesaw State and sweeping a three-game series against last week’s No.17 Vanderbilt in Athens.

Georgia’s first baseman, Charlie Condon, hit a home run in every game last week and has a home run in seven straight games. He leads NCAA Division I with 33 home runs.

UC Irvine (34-10) had the biggest fall, dropping nine spots from No.9 to No.16. They went 2-2, beating San Diego State and winning one out of three against Cal Poly in Irvine.

After not being ranked last week, Troy (34-15) is at No. 21, the University of Oregon (32-15) is at No. 24, and UC Santa Barbara (31-12) is at No. 25.

The three teams that dropped out of the Top 25 NCAA Division I Rankings are Vanderbilt (32-16), which was previously No.17, Alabama (29-18), which was previously No.23, and Utah (30-15), which was previously No.25.

Oregon State (36-12) is at No.7, and they beat Gonzaga 20-13 on May 6. Infielder Travis Bazzana hit two home runs against Gonzaga. He has 26 home runs on the season, the most in a single season for Oregon State.

 

There are five top-25 matchups this week, including a matchup with top ten teams.

No.6 East Carolina will play in Greensville against No.9 Duke.

 

The ACC and SEC each have two top-25 matchups.

No.2 Clemson will travel to No.12 Wake Forest in Winston-Salem for a three-game series on May 10.

No.23 NC State will travel to No. 10 Virginia in Charlottesville for a three-game set this weekend.

No. 5 Arkansas will play at home in Fayetteville against No.14 Mississippi State for a three-game series on May 10.

No. 15 Georgia will travel to No.13 South Carolina for a three-game series in Columbia beginning on May 9.
