Earlier today, the New York Mets announced they’ve acquired infielder/outfielder Eddy Alvarez from the Boston Red Sox. The Mets decided to activate Alvarez to their active roster and designated fellow utility player Pablo Reyes for assignment.
Alvarez, 34, was born in Miami, Florida, but baseball wasn’t the first sport he competed on the national level. He competed in the 2014 Winter Olympic Games as a speed skater. In 2021, he also represented the United States on their baseball team. He became only the sixth athlete to medal in both the Summer and Winter Olympic Games.
This season, Alvarez has played his entire season with Triple-A Worcester. In 114 games playing both the infield and outfield, he hit .247, hitting a career-high 18 home runs and a career-high 77 RBIs while also stealing 18 bases.
Before this year, he made his MLB debut with the Miami Marlins in 2020 and played there in 2021. Alvarez played in 14 games with the Dodgers in 2022. Overall, in the MLB, Alvarez has played in 50 games, hitting one home run and 11 RBI in just 126 at-bats.
He now joins a team that has had its foot on the gas pedal without hitting any brakes. Due to the injury of starting second baseman Jeff McNeil, Alvarez is now the only backup middle infielder on the Mets’ active roster. We will see how the Mets decide to utilize Eddy Alvarez in their plans for the remaining three weeks of the regular season.
