The New York Mets traded Dominican outfielder Alexander Canario to the Pittsburgh Pirates on March 31 for cash considerations, Mets beat writer for MLB.com Anthony DiComo reported.

The Pirates must make a corresponding move to clear space on their 40-man roster once the trade becomes official.

The Pirates have not yet assigned Canario to Triple-A Indianapolis or their Major League roster.

Pittsburgh manager Derek Shelton and general manager Ben Cherington will evaluate the outfield depth chart, which includes Tommy Pham in left, Oneil Cruz in center, and Bryan Reynolds in right. Jack Suwinski, Ji Hwan Bae, and Andrew McCutchen currently serve as reserves across all three outfield spots.

Canario, 24, played parts of the 2023 and 2024 seasons with the Chicago Cubs before the Mets acquired him in a February 24 trade. The Mets designated him for assignment on March 27.

In spring training with New York, Canario batted .306/.419/.611 across 17 games, logging 43 plate appearances with 11 hits, two doubles, three home runs, eight RBI, one stolen base, seven walks, and 15 strikeouts.

During the 2024–25 LIDOM winter league season, he played 28 games with Aguilas Cibaenas, hitting .304/.411/.544 with 24 hits, seven doubles, four home runs, 16 RBI, 13 walks, one stolen base, and 19 strikeouts in 95 plate appearances.

Canario split time in 2024 between Triple-A Iowa and the Cubs. At Triple-A, he posted a .243 average with a .850 OPS over 64 games, recording 60 hits, 13 doubles, 18 home runs, 47 RBI, five stolen bases, 32 walks, and 86 strikeouts in 283 plate appearances.

In 15 games with the Cubs, he hit .280/.357/.440 in 28 plate appearances, collecting seven hits, one double, one homer, two RBI, one stolen base, two walks, and 11 strikeouts.

He made his Major League debut on September 6, 2023, against the San Francisco Giants and appeared in six games that year, hitting .294/.294/.647 with five hits, one double, one triple, one home run, and six RBI in 17 plate appearances.

Canario has played in 21 Major League games, hitting .286/.333/.524 over 45 plate appearances with 12 hits, two doubles, a triple, two home runs, eight RBI, a stolen base, two walks, and 19 strikeouts.

The Pirates, currently 1–4, open a three-game road series against the 3–1 Tampa Bay Rays on April 1 at George Steinbrenner Field in Tampa, Florida—first pitch at 7:05 p.m. EDT.
