Chicago White Sox left-hander Jake Palisch of Richardson, TX, pitching for Double-A Birmingham, ranks second with a 1.19 ERA. Athletics right-handed prospect Donny Eduardo Troconis, from Rio Tucani, Venezuela, ranks third with a 1.24 ERA for Low-A Stockton.
Herring is not currently listed among the Yankees’ Top 30 prospects on MLBPipeline.com. He began the 2025 season with Low-A Tampa and was promoted to High-A Hudson Valley on May 28.
The 6-foot-2, 22-year-old from Grapevine, Texas, was selected by the Yankees in the sixth round of the 2024 Major League Baseball Draft out of Louisiana State University. He signed for a bonus above the organization’s slot threshold of $797,500, opting not to return to LSU for his junior year.
With Low-A Tampa, Herring went 4-1 with a 1.21 ERA over eight starts, throwing 44.2 innings. He allowed 24 hits, six earned runs, two home runs, 16 walks, and struck out 58 batters.
Since his promotion, Herring has gone 1-0 with a 0.96 ERA in three starts for High-A Hudson Valley, tossing 18.2 innings and allowing 14 hits, two earned runs, five walks, and 14 strikeouts.
Across both levels, Herring holds a 5-1 record with a 1.14 ERA in 11 starts, logging 63.1 innings, 38 hits, eight earned runs, two home runs, 21 walks, 72 strikeouts, and a 0.932 WHIP.
In 2024, during his sophomore season at LSU, Herring went 6-1 with a 1.79 ERA over 21 appearances (one start). He earned six saves while pitching 50.1 innings, allowing 39 hits, 10 earned runs, two home runs, 13 walks, and striking out 67 with a 1.033 WHIP.
As a freshman, Herring helped LSU win its seventh national championship in 2023. He went 5-2 with a 3.93 ERA in 18 appearances, throwing 34.1 innings, allowing 32 hits, 15 earned runs, 19 walks, 41 strikeouts, and a 1.485 WHIP.
According to his Baseball Savant profile, “Herring’s best pitch is a sweeping mid-80s slider with horizontal and vertical action that confounds both lefties and righties. He can’t overpower hitters with his fastball, which operates in the low 90s and tops out at 94 with some armside run, and he’ll need to find more velocity or life against better competition.” His scouting grades include a 50 fastball, 60 slider, 45 changeup, 50 control, and 40 overall.
Herring was named Florida State League Pitcher of the Week twice this season—on April 27 and May 25—and earned Pitcher of the Month honors in April.
The (37-25) Hudson Valley Renegades will begin a six-game road series against the (24-37) Jersey Shore BlueClaws, the Philadelphia Phillies affiliate, on June 17 at 6:35 p.m. EDT at ShoreTown Ballpark in Lakewood, N.J.
All minor league games are streamed on BallySports.
