The Nicaraguan Professional Baseball League (LBPN) wrapped up its first full week of play, and every team has played at least four games. Here are some main notes from this past weekend in the LBPN.
Indios de Boer still undefeated… technically
The Boer remain atop the LBPN standings at 4-0 but have played the least amount of games of any team in the league. They defeated Gigantes de Rivas in the first game of a scheduled doubleheader in Rivas on Nov. 8 by a score of 6-4. In the second game, however, Gigantes led 4-0 after four innings. Luckily for Boer, rain suspended the game and eventually rained it out entirely before the minimum innings limit was met. The game will resume on Nov. 21, with both teams experiencing new momentum.
Tigres de Chinandega make multiple roster moves
The Tigres made two roster moves on Sunday. The first was the addition of pitcher Jesus Alberto Garrido, who replaced the released Milton Quintana. The second was the release of pitcher Daniel Corcina Luna and the corresponding insertion of pitcher Jose Dominguez. Two other squads also made roster moves. Indios de Boer released pitcher Roniel Mesa due to a medical designation and replaced him with Sergio Sandoval. Gigantes de Rivas also made a move and registered Hector Fortuna to replace Francisco Leal, who was discharged.
Leones de Leon monster comeback caps off a big week
Before Nov. 8, Leones de Leon were 1-1 with a game at the Estadio Efrain Tijerino Mazariego against Tigres de Chinandega in front of them. Tigres controlled almost the entirety of the game, and Leones entered the top of the ninth inning trailing 6-1. But in that ninth inning, the Leones came alive. Alec Craig opened the inning, getting hit by a pitch, and that set the tone for the inning. After Leones had scored two, Dennicher Carrasco hit a three-run home run with one out to tie the game 5-5, and Ismael Cabrera Taveras shut out Tigres in the bottom of the ninth to send the game to extra innings. Leones scored two runs in the top of the tenth inning, and although Tigres came back with one run in the bottom of the tenth, they were not able to get it done. Leones win an extra inning nail-biter 8-7. That win is the highlight of Leones going 2-1 over the weekend. They have gone from being the last winless team in the LBPN to the second-place team a little over a week into the season.
Three games happened on Sunday, Nov. 10
On Sunday, Tigres de Chinandega hosted Gigantes de Rivas for a doubleheader, and Leones de Leon traveled to Esteli to take on Tren del Norte. Tigres took the first seven-inning game of the doubleheader 4-3, holding off a rally from Gigantes late. Three hours later, Gigantes used a three-hit, four-RBI game from Rusney Castillo to score 12 runs in seven innings and defeat Tigres 12-7. At the Estadio Rufo Marin, Leones de Leon picked up the win on the road against Tren del Norte 6-4. Leadoff man Chase Dawson continues his great season in the LBPN, picking up two hits and bringing his season batting average up to .421.
