The Leones de León announced their roster for the Serie de las Américas, which will be held Feb. 5–13 in Caracas and La Guaira, Venezuela. Several players who suited up for Leones this winter in Nicaragua but are preparing for the World Baseball Classic will not be on the roster.
The Leones defeated the Gigantes de Rivas in seven games to clinch back-to-back championships in Nicaragua’s winter league.
Among the notable arms on the roster is Alfredo Villa, who posted a 2.96 ERA in 70 innings with 65 strikeouts for the Leones this winter. He is expected to serve as the team’s ace. Reliever Jesús Garrido will also be an important piece. He threw 17 scoreless innings this winter for Tigres de Chinandega, striking out 10.
One of the leaders of the offense will be Raico Santos. The Cuban outfielder hit .342/.413/.541 with five home runs and 13 RBIs for the Tren del Norte. His five home runs ranked among the top 10 in the APBN this winter.
Dominican shortstop Deivi Muñoz will be another key offensive contributor. He hit .385/.425/.489 with two home runs and 24 RBIs for the Tren del Norte and is expected to serve as a tablesetter.
Leones will open the tournament against Caimanes de Barranquilla, the champions of Colombia, on Feb. 5 in La Guaira. They will face Cuba on Feb. 6 in Caracas, the Liga Venezolana de Beisbol Profesional champions on Feb. 7 in La Guaira, the champions of Curaçao’s Double-A league on Feb. 8 in La Guaira and Águilas Metropolitanas, last year’s champions of Panama’s ProBeis league, on Feb. 9 in Caracas. Leones will close the round-robin against Argentine champion Club Daom on Feb. 10 in Caracas.
The top four teams will advance to the semifinals on Feb. 12, with the championship game scheduled for Feb. 13.
