On Tuesday, March 31, the North Carolina Tar Heels baseball head coach Scott Forbes received a contract extension. The new extension keeps Forbes in Chapel Hill through the 2031 season.
North Carolina Athletic Director Bubba Cunningham commented on the extension in a press release.
“The success that Carolina baseball has experienced under Scott has been phenomenal, and that is a great credit to his dedication to developing not only terrific baseball players, but also outstanding Tar Heel student-athletes who want to give back to the Carolina community. He makes everyone around him better, and we are glad he will continue to do that for years to come.”
Forbes and his coaching career at North Carolina
Forbes became the head coach at North Carolina ahead of the 2021 season. He replaced the legendary Mike Fox, who was the coach of the Tar Heels from 1999 through 2020.
Forbes’ performance as head coach in Chapel Hill has started well. The Tar Heels have made the NCAA Tournament every year under his direction. In 2024, he led North Carolina to the College World Series for the first time since 2018.
Forbes has won two Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Tournaments for North Carolina in 2022 and 2025. He also led the Tar Heels to the ACC regular season title in 2024. Forbes won the ACC Coach of the Year award that same season.
Before the Tar Heels’ game on Tuesday against Campbell. Forbes has won 224 games as the head coach of North Carolina.
The Tar Heels have won at least 42 games in three of the last four seasons.
Up next for North Carolina
After their midweek matchup against Campbell, the Tar Heels will remain at home for a weekend series against the Boston College Eagles at Boshamer Stadium.
The game on Thursday, April 2, will start at 6 p.m. ET.
North Carolina is ranked sixth in the country in D1 Baseball’s latest top 25 rankings.
