Despite an 8-6 win over the Georgia Bulldogs in Athens, Ga., on Thursday night, the Oklahoma Sooners received some unfortunate news.
According to the Sooners broadcaster Toby Rowland, first baseman Dayton Tockey will likely miss the remainder of the 2025 season due to a hairline fracture in his right ankle.
The injury came up when Tockey made a slide into second base in Thursday night’s game against Georgia. Upon him exiting the game, head coach Skip Johnson replaced him with Brayden Horton, a transfer who previously played for the Liberty Flames.
Rowland also hinted at the possibility that the Oklahoma first baseman could make a return in postseason play.
Statistically, Tockey is a top five hitter on Oklahoma. He had a .293 batting average with an on-base percentage of .392. His 39 total hits this season led to 31 RBI.
Prior to the injury he suffered Thursday, Tockey was putting together his best performance of the season. The first baseman hit two home runs and had five RBIs in the series opener at Foley Field.
This is a tough loss for the Oklahoma offense. Watching how the Sooners bounce back from losing one of their top hitters will be a story to watch in college baseball going forward.
Up Next – With one game and one win in the books, Johnson and his team are one win away from clinching an SEC series win in Athens.
