The Braves made headway in the National League Wild Card race, but the Diamondbacks and Mets failed to win, prolonging the drama. Here’s everything you missed from last night’s MLB action.
Atlanta Braves 2, Kansas City Royals 1 – The Braves edged the Royals courtesy of a Travis d’Arnaud walk-off home run in the ninth inning. The Braves can clinch a postseason berth with a win in the series finale against the Royals or an Arizona Diamondbacks loss.
Milwaukee Brewers 6, New York Mets 0 – Despite striking out 18 times, the Brewers offense scored six runs. The Mets were shut out as the Brewers used Jared Koenig as an opener. Tobias Myers pitched four innings behind him.
San Diego Padres 5, Arizona Diamondbacks 0 – Padres starter Randy Vásquez allowed one hit and one walk in six innings of work. The game was tied until the Padres put together a five-run ninth inning. The Diamondbacks cannot clinch with a win in their final game and may have to wait until Monday to find out if they made the postseason.
Chicago White Sox 4, Detroit Tigers 0 – One game after their 121st loss the White Sox responded with a shutout victory over the Tigers. The Tigers are gearing up for October as they have already clinched.
Chicago Cubs 3, Cincinnati Reds 0 – Kyle Hendricks delivered a vintage performance in the shutout win. He went 7 1/3 innings, allowing just two hits.
Washington Nationals 6, Philadelphia Phillies 3 – The Dodgers have locked up the top seed in the NL, and Philadelphia has secured a bye. With nothing to play for, Trea Turner delivered a game tying home run in the eighth inning. The Nationals responded with a four-run inning to take the lead back.
Pittsburgh Pirates 9, New York Yankees 4 – The Pirates took care of the Yankees, who have clinched the best record in the American League. Aaron Judge went 0-for-5 with five strikeouts.
Miami Marlins 8, Toronto Blue Jays 1 – The Marlins secured a series win in their final series of a forgettable season. Dane Myers went 2-for-4 with five RBIs.
Houston Astros 4, Cleveland Guardians 3 – Justin Verlander went six innings, allowing seven hits and three earned runs. After a shaky start, he settled in the offense did enough to get him the win.
Tampa Bay Rays 7, Boston Red Sox 2 – Junior Caminero led the way for the Rays offense. He went 3-for-5 with three RBIs in the series-clinching win.
Los Angeles Dodgers 13, Colorado Rockies 2 – Shohei Ohtani stole his 58th base. Unless he gets the day off, he will have a chance at 60 as well as the batting title in game 162.
Baltimore Orioles 9, Minnesota Twins 2 – The Twins were eliminated from the postseason the day prior, but the Orioles added insult to injury. Emmanuel Rivera went 4-for-4 with two home runs in the game.
Milwaukee Brewers 8, New York Mets 4 – Rhys Hoskins continued his torture of the Mets with a first inning grand slam. Mets manager Carlos Mendoza was ejected from the game for arguing balls and strikes with the home plate umpire. The Mets doubleheader against the Braves on September 30 could decide their fate.
Texas Rangers 9, Los Angeles Angels 8 – The Rangers put together a four-run ninth inning to comeback and beat the Angels. Nathaniel Lowe went 3-for-4 with three RBIs in the game.
San Diego Padres 5, Arizona Diamondbacks 2 – The Padres can start thinking about resting arms and days off for position players. They have secured the top NL Wild Card spot. Their final two games are against the Diamondbacks who are fighting for a spot in the postseason.
Seattle Mariners 7, Oakland Athletics 6 – Justin Turner put a ball into play in the 10th inning that led to the winning run coming home. Turner grounded to the second baseman, who threw to home, trying to get Leo Rivas, but he avoided the tag and the Mariners won on a fielder’s choice.
San Francisco Giants 6, St. Louis Cardinals 5 – Brett Wisely’s bunt single in the bottom of the eighth inning was followed by a throwing error that brought the go-ahead run home. The final game of the season will decide who wins this series with no postseason implications.
