One Thing From Every MLB Wild Card Series Game

The first game of each Wild Card series was filled with interesting twists and turns. The Home team only won one of the games on an eventful first day of the postseason.

New York Mets 8, Milwaukee Brewers 4 – The Mets were unfazed by the doubleheader against the Atlanta Braves. Luis Severino went six innings, giving the bullpen a chance to reload. The game started off as a back-and-forth affair before manager Pat Murphy decided to pull Freddy Peralta after just 68 pitches. From the fifth inning on, the Brewers went 15 up, 15 down. The decision. To pull Peralta and hand the ball to the bullpen will be discussed heavily if the Brewers are eliminated in this series.

Kansas City Royals 1, Baltimore Orioles 0 – Corbin Burnes went into the ninth inning before the Orioles went to the bullpen. Burnes managed his pitch count well, throwing 85 pitches in the game. Unfortunately for Burnes, the offense could him get him any run support. Cole Ragans struck out eight in six innings of work. Bobby Witt Jr. drove in the only run of the game with a sixth-inning single.

San Diego Padres 4, Atlanta Braves 0 – San Diego was in control the entire game. Fernando Tatis Jr. hit a two-run home run on the first pitch he saw in the game to take an early lead. Atlanta’s offense could never get going, as Michael King had a phenomenal game. In his first postseason start, he went seven innings and struck out 12. He allowed just five hits and only one went for extra bases.

Detroit Tigers 3, Houston Astros 1 – If the Tigers wanted to win this series, they needed to win when Tarik Skubal took the ball, and the Cy Young Award favorite did not disappoint. He went six innings with six strikeouts. Matt Vierling’s RBI single in the second inning was the last run of the ballgame for the Tigers, but it was enough. The Astros did not score until the ninth inning and gave the Tigers a scare, loading the bases in the final frame, but Beau Brieske came in to get the final two outs.
