On Friday, February 20, Oregon State right-handed pitcher Dax Whitney put together an excellent start against the Baylor Bears.
In a 3-1 win at the Round Rock Classic, Whitney struck out 17 batters over seven innings. This tied an Oregon State program record for strikeouts in a single game.
He also allowed just two hits and one walk. Baylor could not score any runs with Whitney on the mound.
Whitney’s pitching performance at Dell Diamond was the best of his career so far in Corvallis. He now has a 0.76 ERA and 23 strikeouts in 12 innings of work this season.
Oregon State head coach Mitch Canham talked about his star sophomore right-hander.
“Everything seemed to be working,” Canham said. “Commanding the tempo — not just his stuff, but commanding the tempo and bringing energy and enthusiasm throughout the duration of it. There are a lot of strikeouts swinging. He’s missing the barrel entirely on that and expanding a little bit when he needed to. When people watch that video, they’re going to say, ‘Well, how the heck do we adjust to that? It’s pretty good.’”
