The New York Yankees and veteran infielder Pablo Reyes have parted ways, as on June 19, the utility man elected free agency. Reyes was designated for assignment earlier this to make room for the returning Giancarlo Stanton.
Reyes appeared in 24 games for the Yankees this season, playing left field, right field, second base and third base. He even pitched an inning in relief on May 31, when the Yankees lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Reyes’ ability to play multiple positions provides versatility defensively, but this season he has struggled at the plate. He has a .194 batting average and .468 OPS in 34 plate appearances. His WAR was also in the negatives, at -0.5.
Despite the offensive woes, Reyes did have some big moments for the Yankees. On June 12, Reyes scored the deciding run for the Yankees against the Kansas City Royals on a wild play. Reyes went all the way home on an infield single from second base. The Yankees won the game 1-0.
Reyes, from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, made his debut with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2018. He played there for two seasons, before he was suspended for the 2020 season due to PED usage. Since then he has bounced around between the Milwaukee Brewers, Boston Red Sox, New York Mets, and the Yankees.
Reyes will most likely receive some minor league offers from clubs. The question that remains is if fans will see Pablo Reyes in the MLB again this season.
