Panama Goes All-In on Jose Mayorga Ahead of Crowded 2026 International Calendar

Panama’s baseball federation has made its direction unmistakably clear: José Mayorga is the man leading the program into one of the most demanding international stretches in recent memory.

On Thursday, Federales de Chiriquí officially announced that Mayorga will return as manager for the Serie del Caribe Jalisco 2026, confirming that the veteran skipper will guide Panama’s representatives in Mexico this February. The announcement, shared across social media and accompanied by heavy national branding, underscores Panama’s broader strategy of continuity and leadership as it builds toward the 2026 World Baseball Classic.

“¡José Mayorga está de vuelta!” the Federales wrote in Spanish. “Nuestro manager regresa para liderar a Federales de Chiriquí en la Serie del Caribe Jalisco 2026.”

Under Mayorga, Federales de Chiriquí captured two PROBEIS championships and finished third at the 2024 Serie del Caribe in Miami, one of the strongest international showings by a Panamanian club in recent decades. His return immediately sparked a wave of fan reaction online, with supporters pledging to travel to Jalisco and turn Charros de Jalisco’s home stadium into a sea of Panamanian flags.

The decision also formally locks in Mayorga’s role across three major international competitions in a 45-day span, positioning him as one of the busiest managers in global baseball early in 2026.

A 45-Day International Sprint

With the Serie del Caribe assignment confirmed, Mayorga’s early-2026 calendar now spans three countries and three elite tournaments, each serving a distinct purpose in Panama’s preparation pipeline.

In February, Mayorga will manage Federales de Chiriquí at the Serie del Caribe in Jalisco, Mexico, marking the club’s fourth appearance in the prestigious tournament. At the same time, Panama will also field a team in the Serie de las Américas in Venezuela, using the dual-front approach to evaluate depth, scouting looks, and late roster decisions ahead of the World Baseball Classic.

That preparation culminates in March, when Mayorga will manage Team Panama at the 2026 World Baseball Classic in San Juan, Puerto Rico, where the nation will look to build on recent momentum from the 2023 WBC and the 2024 Premier12.

Date Tournament Role Location
February 2026 Serie del Caribe Manager (Federales de Chiriquí) Jalisco, Mexico
February 2026 Serie de las Américas Staff / Scouting Venezuela
March 6–11, 2026 World Baseball Classic Manager (Team Panama) San Juan, Puerto Rico

The condensed timeline leaves little margin for error — but Panama’s leadership views that intensity as an advantage rather than a risk.

Continuity Over Experimentation

Rather than reshuffling leadership ahead of the WBC, Panama has chosen to double down on familiarity, trusting Mayorga’s ability to manage veteran professionals, integrate prospects, and navigate international tournament pressure.

That philosophy mirrors the federation’s approach in October, when it announced a 32-man preliminary Copa América roster featuring a mix of MLB veterans, upper-level prospects, and returning national team contributors. Mayorga’s continued presence ensures that evaluations made during the Serie del Caribe and Serie de las Américas directly inform final WBC decisions.

Promotional materials released alongside the announcement leaned heavily into national symbolism, pairing Mayorga with iconic Panamanian imagery — including the Panamá Viejo tower — signaling that this is not merely a club assignment, but a national mission.

Momentum Heading Into 2026

Panama enters 2026 with legitimate international credibility. The program has produced consistent performances across recent cycles, and its player pool continues to deepen through MLB systems, winter leagues, and domestic competition.

By placing Mayorga at the center of its international roadmap, Panama is betting that experience, continuity, and cohesion will outweigh experimentation as it prepares to face elite competition in March.

For now, the message from the federation — and from fans already planning trips to Jalisco — is unified and unmistakable:

Panama is all-in. And José Mayorga is leading the charge. ??⚾
