Philadelphia Phillies Calling Up Mexican-Born Right-Handed Pitcher Alan Rangel Ahead of Series at Pittsburgh

Alan Rangel

The Philadelphia Phillies called up Mexican-born right-handed pitcher Alan Rangel from Triple-A Lehigh Valley prior to the first game of their three-game road series against the Pittsburgh Pirates, the team announced June 6.

The move corresponded with right-hander Seth Johnson being optioned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley following Thursday’s game.

Rangel, 27, from Hermosillo, Mexico, made 12 starts this season with Triple-A Lehigh Valley, posting a 4-0 record and 5.02 ERA. He allowed 62 hits, 32 earned runs, 12 home runs, 22 walks, and struck out 64 batters, with a 1.465 WHIP.

During the 2025 Grapefruit League, Rangel made three relief appearances and logged five innings, allowing three hits and one earned run while striking out four. He was optioned to Triple-A on March 10.

Rangel also pitched this past winter for the Naranjeros de Hermosillo in the 2024-25 Liga ARCO Mexicana del Pacífico season, going 1-4 with a 3.38 ERA over seven starts.

He began the 2024 season with the Los Angeles Angels, appearing at the Arizona Complex League and Double-A Rocket City levels before being released on July 1. He signed with Philadelphia on July 16 and finished the year pitching for Low-A Clearwater and Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Across all levels in 2024, Rangel went 3-2 with a 3.77 ERA in 18 appearances (13 starts), throwing 57.1 innings with 62 strikeouts and a 1.012 WHIP.

Over 10 minor league seasons with the Atlanta Braves (2015–23), Angels (2024), and Phillies (2024–25), Rangel has a career 43-56 record and 4.48 ERA in 199 appearances (167 starts). He has one complete game and 890 strikeouts in 864 innings pitched.

If the Phillies decide to use Rangel out of the bullpen under manager Rob Thomson’s staff, he would join a group that includes Matt Strahm, Orion Kerkering, Jordan Romano, Taijuan Walker, Max Lazar, Tanner Banks, Joe Ross, and Carlos Hernández.

The Phillies will also evaluate whether Rangel might earn a starting role while Aaron Nola remains on the 15-day injured list. The current rotation includes Zack Wheeler, Jesus Luzardo, Cristopher Sánchez, Ranger Suárez, and rookie Mick Abel.

The Phillies (37-25) open their series against the Pirates (23-40) at 6:40 p.m. EDT on June 6.
