Neunborn is in his third season with the Phillies organization, and has risen steadily from High-A Jersey Shore to Double-A Reading and now to Lehigh Valley. In 19 appearances with Reading this season, including five starts, Neunborn threw 45 2/3 innings with a 3.35 ERA and 51 strikeouts against just nine walks.
He made his first appearance with Lehigh Valley over the weekend, allowing two runs on four hits in 4 1/3 innings in a 9-6 loss to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, the Triple-A affiliate of the New York Yankees.
Neunborn turned heads at the 2023 World Baseball Classic when he played a key role in Australia’s 8-7 upset of South Korea, retiring seven consecutive batters, including Tommy Edman, Ha-Seong Kim, and Jung-hoo Lee.
Born in South Africa, Neunborn’s professional career began in the Australian Baseball League, where he pitched for the Perth Heat in 2019-20 and the Adelaide Giants in 2020-21 and 2022-23. He was named the ABL’s Rookie of the Year for the 2020-21 season, when he threw 25 2/3 innings with a 1.75 ERA and 0.700 WHIP for Adelaide.
