Move over, New Orleans, there’s going to be a new Super Dome on the world’s sports landscape.
Taichung City, Taiwan Mayor Shiu-Yen Lu announced that a 16.35-hectare parcel at the western end of Taichung has would be the site of a 30,000-plus seat domed stadium tentatively named the Taichung Super Dome.
“With the operation experience of the Taichung Intercontinental Baseball Stadium, the city will work with the private sector to plan a forward-looking, world-class multi-functional baseball stadium which will strengthen the economic development conditions of Taichung’s sports industry and provide citizens with a safe and high-quality sports venue,” Mayor Lu said in a press release.
Taichung City is home to the Taichung Intercontinental Baseball Stadium, a 20,000-seat outdoor stadium that opened in 2006. Since its construction, the ballpark has hosted international competitions, including the 2006 Intercontinental Cup, the 2013 U18 Baseball World Cup, the home games of the Chinese Professional Baseball League’s CTBC Brothers since 2015, and Pool Play in the 2023 World Baseball Classic.
Another recently-built ballpark in Taiwan, the Taipei Dome, opened in Dec. 2023, adn New Taipei City has also announced plans for a 50,000-seat domed ballpark, though a site has yet to be chosen.
“Taichung has been hosting numerous international tournaments after the completion of the Taichung Intercontinental Baseball Stadium and has won the recognition from WBSC as a ‘World Baseball City’ in 2013. A Taichung Super Dome will definitely better fulfil the title,” the Chinese Taipei Baseball Association said in a press release lauding the proposed new ballpark in Taichung, noting that the organization hopes to bring more international tournaments to Taichung when the new venue opens.
The Taichung Super Dome is expected to open in 2030.
