Panama rallied from a 2-0 deficit to defeat Mexico and capture their second win in Group A at Premier12. First baseman Carlos Quiroz has fueled Panama’s offense.
In Panama’s first game against the Netherlands, Quiroz provided an RBI on the day, courtesy of an RBI double off Shairon Martis. Quiroz started the scoring for Panama in game two, crushing a solo home run to right field to get Panama to tie things at one. Panama would end up winning their second game of Premier12 over Venezuela, 4-2.
As for yesterday’s performance, Quiroz was clutch once again. Ruben Tejada would lead the inning off with a double and make it to third when Quiroz came up to the dish. Quiroz grounded out, but Tejada was able to score to get Panama on the board. Jose Ramos would tie the game right after. The game remained tied until the bottom of the eighth, with runners on the corners and Quiroz due up with one out. He would fly out to right field, but Ruben Tejada was able to score, with Quiroz picking up his second RBI of the game, and it was the game-winning RBI, as Panama completed their comeback over Mexico, winning 3-2 to increase their record to 2-1 in Premier12.
Quiroz, 38, has played with the Federales de Chiriqui in the Panamanian Professional Baseball League since 2008. In 15 seasons with the club, Quiroz has 2,043 at-bats, 37 home runs, 387 RBIs, hitting for a career .348 average. He also ranks fourth among the league’s active hits leaders, tallying 713 hits.
Panama will face the United States tonight, and they are looking to continue their winning ways at Coloso del Pacifico in Tepic, Mexico. The first pitch is set for 9 PM EST.
