On August 27, Puerto Rican left-handed pitcher Jonathan Bermudez made his MLB debut with the Miami Marlins. The Marlins selected his contract on Aug. 25. To officially welcome Bermudez to the active roster, the team optioned Emmanuel Ramirez to Triple-A and moved outfielder Dane Myers to the 60-day IL.

Bermudez, 28, was born in Coamo, Puerto Rico. The Houston Astros drafted him in the 23rd round of the 2018 MLB Draft from Southeastern University. Bermudez spent four seasons pitching with the Astros minor league affiliates, reaching as high as Triple-A in 2021. The Astros had selected him to their 40-man roster after the conclusion of the 2021 season to protect him from the Rule 5 Draft. In August 2022, Bermudez was designated for assignment after struggling with an 8.96 ERA in 14 starts with Triple-A Sugar Land.

A few weeks later, the San Francisco Giants claimed him off waivers. Bermudez would finish the year with Triple-A Sacramento, where he would be released at the start of the 2023 season. Bermudez also represented Puerto Rico at the 2023 World Baseball Classic, although he did not appear in any games during the tournament. After the Classic had wrapped up, Bermudez signed a minor league contract with the Miami Marlins.

The Marlins assigned Bermudez to Double-A Pensacola for the 2023 season, where he would make 18 starts in 19 appearances, recording a 5-5 record, a 4.58 ERA, punching out 109 batters through 94.1 innings pitched. Bermudez would resign for the 2024 season, beginning the year with Double-A Pensacola and earning a promotion to Triple-A Jacksonville. Bermudez didn’t pitch too much in Triple-A, posting a 1-2 record in three starts in six appearances, striking out 28 batters, holding a 6.46 ERA.

But, this was enough for the Marlins to bring the southpaw to the show. Bermudez came in relief for starter Roddery Muñoz. He would go on to fire three and two thirds innings, allowing six hits, two earned runs, allowing no walks while punching out three batters. He allowed one home run to Rockies outfielder Sam Hilliard. The Marlins would rally back late to win against the Rockies 9-8.
