Puerto Rico native Matthew Lugo shines for Angels in first MLB start

The Los Angeles Angels called up their No.13 prospect, Matthew Lugo, before their May 9 matchup with the Baltimore Orioles.

Lugo, a Puerto Rico native, appeared as a pinch runner on May 9 but was a starter on Saturday night. He went 1-for-4, notching his first triple, RBI, and hit in the game.

A product of the Carlos Beltran Baseball Academy, he was drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the second round of the 2019 draft. He participated in the Puerto Rican Winter League as a minor leaguer with the Red Sox. In 2024, he was traded to the Angels in a deal that sent Luis García to the Red Sox.

He started in Triple-A Salt Lake City before he made his first start on Saturday night. He notched an RBI triple in the bottom of the fourth inning to put the Angels up 4-0 over the Orioles. The Angels won the game 5-2.

“Just incredible,” Lugo told MLB.com‘s Rhett Bollinger. “It’s crazy, especially in my first game to contribute and help the team win with that triple and RBI. It was awesome.”
