On Monday, the Boston Red Sox held their second annual Dominican Republic Culture Night at Fenway Park. The Red Sox played host to the defending World Series champion Texas Rangers to start the three-game series.
Legendary merengue musician Toño Rosario and well-known Dominican businessman Felix Antonio Cruz Jiminian threw out the ceremonial first pitches. Dominican vocalist Yorgelis Williams sang the National Anthem. Entertainment before the game was provided on Jersey Street and on the Big Concourse inside the ballpark.
Fans who purchased a special ticket package received a custom Red Sox replica jersey in Dominican Republic colors before the game.
The games festivities were planned in collaboration with the Dominican Festival of Boston. Festival Leader Enrique Garcia was recognized on the field before the game. Ten local teens who recently participated in the Red Sox Lindos Sueños program, which strives to bring people of different backgrounds together through baseball, were also recognized on the field. The group recently assisted in building a home in El Mamon, Dominican Republic.
During the game, Red Sox Dominican-born all-star Rafael Devers went 0-for-4 with a walk and scored a run. The eight-year veteran was selected to his third all-star team this season and is batting .299 with 25 home runs. The 25-year-old righty from the DR Brayan Bello started the game for the Sox. The third-year player went six innings, allowing one run on four hits with five strikeouts. Bello is 10-5 with a 4.97 ERA in his third season. The Red Sox won the game in the 10th inning after Rob Refsnyder singled to drive in the winning run.
