Renato Nunez is Firing on All Cylinders Early On In The LVBP

First Baseman Renato Nunez was named Player of the Week in the LVBP after blasting seven home runs in the first eight games of the season. Nunez, 30, has led the Navegantes del Magallanes to a record of 6-2 during that span, giving them the best record in the entire league. This is Nunez’s third consecutive winter with the Magallanes.

Nunez has put up a staggering stat line in the first eight games of the season. He has had 15 hits in 30 at-bats to the tune of a .500 batting average. He leads the league in home runs with seven, a slugging percentage of 1.300, OPS with 1.871, RBIs with 13, total bases with 39, and runs scored with 12. Nunez is also second in hits and batting average while only striking out twice this season.

Nunez is a native of Valencia, Venezuela, and most recently spent time with the Guerreros de Oaxaca of Liga Mexicana de Beisbol. He has played for four LMB teams since the start of 2023, playing 35 games, with 13 of those games being in Oaxaca. Before that, he played in the Nippon Professional Baseball with the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters for one season in 2022.

Nunez is a former MLB veteran who appeared in six MLB seasons from 2016 to 2021 with the Oakland Athletics, Texas Rangers, Baltimore Orioles, and Detroit Tigers. He has a career 101 OPS+ in the MLB and last played in the major leagues in August of 2021 before being released by the Tigers.

Nunez is mashing balls right now in Venezuela, but it will be nearly impossible to keep launching balls out of the park at this rate. However, Nunez is on track for a dominant winter in Venezuela, and the Magallanes are reaping the benefits.
