Report: Julio Urias On Tomateros de Culiacan Preliminary Roster For 2025-26

According to a report from Francys Romero, Julio Urias will return to professional baseball this winter in his native Mexico.

Urias was suspended twice under Major League Baseball’s domestic violence policy, with the second suspension having concluded at the end of the 2025 All-Star Break, but no MLB club has signed Urias, leaving him a free agent. Romero reports that he’s on the preliminary roster of the Tomateros de Culiacan of the Liga ARCO Mexicana del Pacifico.

A native of Culiacan, Sinaloa, Mexico, Urias last pitched in MLB in 2023, when he posted a 4.60 ERA in 117 1/3 innings over 21 starts before he was hit with a second domestic violence policy suspension after an incident with his wife outside a Sept. 3, 2023 soccer game at BMO Stadium in Los Angeles.

Urias’ agent, Scott Boras, told Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times in July that the pitcher hopes to return to the Major Leagues, though he’ll need time to get back into pitching shape. A second post on X by Romero indicated that Boras and Urias still think he’ll need time to get ready to pitch and get himself ready for a return to Major League Baseball, should a team have interest in signing him.

Urias throws a fastball that tops out at 97 mph, complemented with a low-80s changeup, a curveball, and a slider. He has a career ERA of 3.11 in 717 innings of work over eight seasons, all with the Dodgers, and has never pitched professionally in his home country.

In 2023, Urias pitched for Mexico at the World Baseball Classic, making two starts and allowing seven runs on eight hits over nine innings, striking out 10 and walking one with a 1.000 WHIP.

If he can put up a solid season in the LAMP, it’s possible that he could pitch for Mexico in the 2026 World Baseball Classic and use the opportunity as an opportunity to impress MLB clubs who need starting pitching and might be willing to risk the bad publicity that would come from signing the only twice-suspended player under the MLB domestic violence policy.
