Zhang, 24, was born in Singapore and is on the active roster for the China national team for the 2025 World Baseball Classic Qualifiers.
China will participate in the 2025 WBCQ at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Tucson, Ariz., from March 2–6 and will face Colombia, Brazil and Germany.
China is ranked at No. 20 in the World Baseball Rankings from the World Baseball Softball Confederation. Colombia is ranked at No. 13, Brazil at No. 23, and Germany at No. 17.
Zhang played with the Lake Country DockHounds of the American Association in 2024 and went 2-1 with a 0.72 ERA, throwing 37.2 innings over 31 relief appearances. He recorded 11 saves, allowing 16 hits, three earned runs, one home run, 24 walks, 61 strikeouts, and a 1.062 WHIP.
At the beginning of the 2024 season, Zhang signed a minor league contract with the Toronto Blue Jays on January 16, 2024 and was released on March 24 before signing with the Lake Country DockHounds.
In 2023, Zhang split his time in the Los Angeles Angels organization in Double-A Rocket City and Low-A Inland Empire. He appeared in 19 relief games and posted a 2-2 record with a 4.40 ERA and two saves over 28.2 innings, allowing 29 hits, 14 earned runs, two home runs, 18 walks, 38 strikeouts and a 1.640 WHIP.
During the 2023 WBC, Zhang posted a 0-1 record in one relief appearance and one start, with an 8.31 ERA over 4.1 innings—allowing five hits, four earned runs, three walks and five strikeouts—and became the first player from Singapore to appear at the tournament.
China went 0-4 in Pool B at the Tokyo Dome at the 2023 WBC against the Czech Republic, Japan, Australia and South Korea and must qualify for the 2026 event; they face Germany on March 2 at 1 p.m. EST.
Zhang pitched for the Mahoning Valley Scrappers in the 2022 Major League Baseball Draft League season after his senior season at Lee University. He went 2-1 and posted a 3.03 ERA in 18 appearances, including two starts, over 32.2 innings—allowing 20 hits, 11 earned runs, 25 walks, 55 strikeouts and a 1.378 WHIP—before signing a minor league contract with the Angels on Jan. 30, 2023.
In the 2024 LMB season, the Dorados de Chihuahua finished last in the Zona del Norte with a 33-60 record.
The Dorados de Chihuahua will open the 2025 LMB regular season on the road against the Algodoneros de Unión Laguna at Estadio Revolución in Torreón, Coahuila, Mexico, on April 18 for a three-game series. No game start times have been announced for any of the 20 LMB clubs.
