Robinson Cano, a veteran of 18 seasons in Major League Baseball with the New York Yankees, Seattle Mariners, New York Mets, and Atlanta Braves, will return to the Diablos Rojos del Mexico in 2025.
The native of San Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republic led the Diablos Rojos to the 2024 Serie del Rey, where they defeated the Sultanes de Monterrey for the Copa Zaachila. Cano won the league batting title, hitting .431 and leading the league in hits with 141 in 327 at-bats during the regular season.
“For me it was more of a family decision than anything else,” Robinson Canó said in a press release issued by the Diablos Rojos. “It really wasn’t a difficult decision because at Diablos Rojos we are a family, because of the way they treat us, because of the way we live day to day. It’s like living as a family and that’s why it wasn’t difficult to decide to return.”
With Cano driving the offense, the Diablos’ 71-19 regular season record gave the club a winning percentage of .789, the highest in the history of the LMB in a season of 90 or more games. The Serie del Rey victory was the 17th championship in the Diablos Rojos history.
“The team we had was very good and I hope that almost everyone can return. I know that Jorge [Del Valle, Deputy President of the Diablos Rojos] is looking for the pieces to complement the best possible roster for the important upcoming season,” said Cano in the team’s press release. “When they ask us about the second championship, I will simply say that we are going to go out to win game by game. I am one of those people who does not like to say things before they happen. We are going to go out to do things as best as possible because we know that the other teams are also going to prepare to the maximum.”
Cano is currently playing for his hometown club, the Estrellas Orientales of LIDOM, who are 5-7 in the 16-game round robin phase of the playoffs. He has played in the last four Caribbean Series as a reinforcement for the LIDOM champions.
