Bobby Witt hit a clutch homer to help the Royals sweep the doubleheader against Cleveland and pull within one game of the division lead. Here’s everything you missed from yesterday in the MLB.
Royals 4, Guardians 3
Bobby Witt hit a home run in the eighth inning that gave Kansas City the lead and helped them win game one in a series between AL Central contenders. Witt is batting .417 since the all-star break. MJ Melendez hit a three-run homer in the fourth, setting up the Witt winner. The Royals won the first game of the doubleheader against the division leader.
Blue Jays 4, Red Sox 1
The Blue Jays won in a game that began on June 26 but was postponed. George Springer tied the game with a home run in the sixth before a two-RBI double from Vlad Guerrero in the eighth inning put Toronto on top. Danny Jansen became the first major leaguer to play for both teams in the same game after he was traded to Boston on July 27.
Phillies 3, Astros 2
The Phillies won their third straight after a game-winning single by Bryce Harper in the tenth inning. Philadelphia rallied from two down off a home run from Brandon Marsh in the fifth and a game-tying single from Nick Castellanos in the sixth inning.
Cubs 18, Pirates 8
An eight-run sixth inning capped off by a Dansby Swanson grand slam aided the Cubs in a blowout over Pittsburgh. Miguel Amaya had a career-high four hits and drove in four runs. Chicago had eight steals for the first time in over 100 years. The Cubs have won four of their last five.
Royals 9, Guardians 4
Salvador Perez hit a sixth-inning grand slam and had a career-high six RBIs as the Royals swept the doubleheader to pull within one game of the division lead. Perez broke the tie with a solo homer in the fifth inning. Kansas City shrunk the Guardians division lead while posting an AL-best 22-13 record since the all-star break.
Torres, Wells, and Chisholm all homered for the Yankees to pick up their fifth win over the last six games. Nestor Cortes allowed one run on four hits in six and a two-thirds. Nationals prospect Dylan Crews went 0-for-3 with a walk in his debut.
Toronto handed the Red Sox their fifth straight loss after George Springer hit a three-run homer that gave the Blue Jays the lead and began a five-run fifth inning. Jose Berrios struck out six and allowed two earned in an outing that stretched seven and two-thirds.
Braves 10, Twins 6
Matt Olsen hit a three-run homer in the first and a two-run double in the second inning to help the Braves jump out to the early lead. Travis d’Arnaud hit a two-run home run that capped off the five-run second that helped Atlanta win their third game in the last four. The Braves remain in the last NL wild card spot.
Padres 7, Cardinals 4
Manny Machado began the game with a two-run homer to put the Padres in the lead. Machado drove in another run with a double in the fifth inning, and rookie Jackson Merrill drove in three runs of his own off two singles. San Diego is four games behind the Dodgers in the NL West.
Tigers 6, White Sox 4
Detroit completed the four-game sweep in Chicago after a five-run seventh that gave the club the lead. Parker Meadows hit a solo home run that tied the game before Colt Keith drove in another on a single to give the Tigers the lead. Spencer Torkelson finished off the inning with a three-run homer that added a cushion to the Detroit lead.
Rockies 3, Marlins 2
Ryan McMahon broke the tie with a home run in the sixth inning that gave Colorado the lead and helped them come away with the win. The Rockies scored two runs in the fifth inning, which was capped off by an RBI single from Jake Cave that tied the game.
Mariners 5, Rays 1
Randy Arozarena hit a three-run homer against his former team to break the 1-1 tie in the third. Bryce Miller had ten strikeouts and allowed one run in seven innings. Seattle is three and a half games back of the AL West lead.
