On Monday, the Seibu Lions signed former MLB reliever Trey Wingenter to a deal for the 2025 Nippon Professional Baseball season. Wingenter is coming off of a season pitching for the Boston Red Sox and Chicago Cubs.

For the Cubs and Red Sox in 2024, he pitched a combined 8.1 innings. The bulk of his MLB career came back in 2018 and 2019 for the San Diego Padres.

While in San Diego, he pitched 70 innings in those two seasons and recorded a 5.14 ERA with 99 strikeouts.

Wingenter also spent some time pitching for the Detroit Tigers during the 2023 season.

In the NPB last season, Seibu finished in last place in the Pacific League at 49-91-3. They had the worst overall record in the league. Wingenter could be a spark that improves the Lions’ pitching staff.
