Seven National Seeds Fall Short in 2025 NCAA Tournament Regionals

With the 2025 NCAA Tournament regionals in the books. A healthy number of national seeds failed to make it out of their hosted regionals.

Top Two National Seeds, Vanderbilt and Texas, Fail to Make it to the Super Regionals – Seven of the 16 national seeds are not heading to the super regionals. This firstly includes the No. 1 and No. 2 overall national seeds in Vanderbilt and Texas, who both lost their own hosted regionals.

This is only the second time since 1999 that the No. 1 and No. 2 national seeds have lost this early in the NCAA Tournament.

Vanderbilt was the first-ever national seed to not even play in their regional final. Instead, Louisville and Wright State faced off in that matchup with Louisville advancing to their second super regional this decade.

Five Other National Seeds Lost as Well – The Big Ten regular season champion Oregon Ducks were knocked out of the Eugene regional in only two games as the Arizona Wildcats advanced to the super regional from that group.

The Clemson Tigers were only able to beat South Carolina-Upstate as losses to Kentucky and West Virginia knocked them out of the NCAA Tournament.

The Georgia Bulldogs were eliminated from their hosted regional in Athens. Much like Clemson, they were only able to beat the four seed, Binghamton, and then lost to Duke and Oklahoma State.

The Ole Miss Rebels fell victim to the Cinderella run from the Murray State Racers. Head coach Dan Skirka’s team was able to beat Ole Miss twice during the Oxford regional to advance.

After being upset by Columbia in the first game of the Hattiesburg regional, Southern Miss was able to string three wins in a row. This forced a winner-take-all game against the Miami Hurricanes on Monday, June 2.

However, the Hurricanes defeated the Golden Eagles 5-4 to advance to their first super regional since 2016.

Up Next – The 2025 NCAA Tournament super regionals are set to begin on Friday, June 6, as 16 teams remain in the quest to win the 2025 National Championship.

The first game of the super regionals will be the matchup between Arizona and North Carolina at the Chapel Hill super regional in Boshamer Stadium.

The first pitch for that game is scheduled for noon EDT.
