Seven Things To Know About The 2025 Caribbean Series

 Leif Skodnick - World Baseball Network  |    Jan 29th, 2025 4:45pm EST

1. What is the Caribbean Series? The Caribbean Series is an annual tournament played between the champions of the member leagues of the Confederacion de Beisbol Profesional del Caribe. Those leagues, which play in the winter, are the Dominican Republic’s LIDOM, Mexico’s Liga ARCO Mexicana del Pacifico, Venezuela’s Liga Venezolana de Beisbol Profesional, and Puerto Rico’s Liga Beisbol Profesional Roberto Clemente.

The annual event has also invited teams from other countries over the years. In 2023, Cuba, Panama, Colombia, and Curacao all sent their winter league champions to the Caribbean Series in Caracas, Venezuela. Last year, Panama, Nicaragua, and Curacao played in the Caribbean Series at loanDepot Park in Miami.

2. Where is this year’s Caribbean Series? This year’s Caribbean Series is being held in Mexicali, Baja California, Mexico, at El Nido de Las Aguilas, the home of the Aguilas de Mexicali of the Liga ARCO Mexicana del Pacifico.

3. Who are this year’s invitees? Rather than inviting a champion from one of the winter leagues operating around Latin America that is not a member of the CBPC, the CBPC instead invited the Japan Breeze, a barnstorming team managed by the Venezuelan former MLB outfielder Alex Ramirez, who had a Hall of Fame career in Japan with the Yokohama DeNA BayStars of Nippon Professional Baseball. The Japan Breeze has a roster largely composed of unknown players from Japan’s industrial league and independent leagues.

4. Which teams advanced to this year’s Caribbean Series? Each of the four leagues of the CBPC has crowned a champion that will play in Mexicali starting on Friday. The LIDOM champion is the Leones del Escogido, managed by former MLB player Albert Pujols. Venezuela will send the Cardenales de Lara, managed by former Atlanta Brave Henry Blanco. Puerto Rico’s LBPRC will send the Indios de Mayaguez, and the LAMP’s champion, the Charros de Jalisco, are managed by Los Angeles Angels bench coach Benji Gil.

5. What’s the format for this event? Each team will play the four other teams with a day off during the round robin phase of the event. The top four teams after the round robin will advance to the semifinals, with the winners advancing to the final and the losers going to the third place game.

6. Will the Caribbean Series be televised? Yes, this year’s Caribbean Series will be televised live on MLB Network in English for the first time. If you would prefer to watch in Spanish, it will also be televised and streamed live on ESPN Deportes.
