Shohei Ohtani Nearing 50-50 Season: One Thing From Each MLB Game

Shohei Ohtani took another step towards the historic 50-50 season. He hit his 47th home run and stole his 48th base. It is not a question of “if” but “when.” Here’s everything you missed across the league yesterday.

Dodgers 10, Cubs 8

The Dodgers scored five runs in the first inning, all from home runs. Shohei Ohtani hit his 47th home run to lead things off. Tommy Edman, Will Smith, and Max Muncy hit back-to-back-to-back home runs later in the inning. The Cubs tied the game up, but the Dodgers held the Cubs off from another comeback victory.

Mariners 5, Padres 2

Bryan Woo took a perfect game into the seventh inning before Fernando Tatis Jr. hit a leadoff home run to end it. The Mariners offense did enough to get Woo the win.

Giants 13, Brewers 2

The Giants’ offense came to play to even up the series against the Brewers. They scored ten runs, all earned, against starter Colin Rea. Rea went just four innings, as the Brewers will want to put this one behind them.

Athletics 5, Astros 4

Joey Estes delivered 6 2/3 innings and allowed just two earned runs. It was his eighth quality start of the season. The A’s secured the series win against the Astros.

Pirates 3, Marlins 1

The Pirates took a 3-0 lead in the second inning and didn’t score again. The Marlins plated one in the ninth inning and loaded the bases with two outs. However, a fly ball from Xavier Edwards sealed the game. The Pirates swept the season series with the Marlins.

Guardians 6, White Sox 4

Lane Thomas picked up four RBIs in the game. The interesting part was all four RBIs came from infield singles. Thomas had two two-run infield singles. One came in the first inning and another in the third.

Mets 6, Blue Jays 2

Bowden Francis took a no-hitter into the ninth inning for the second time in four starts. For the second time, his no-hit bid ended with a leadoff home run in the ninth. Francisco Lindor’s lead-off home run started a six-run inning for the Mets.

Diamondbacks 14, Rangers 4

The Diamondbacks scored two touchdowns, securing the series win. Eugenio Suárez went 4-4 at the plate with two solo home runs.

Tigers 7, Rockies 4

The Tigers sent nine to the plate in the first inning, scoring six runs off of starter Tanner Gordon. Kerry Carpenter went 4-4 with a triple, double, and two singles.

Phillies 3, Rays 2

Nick Castellanos was hit by a pitch in the eighth inning for the second consecutive night. This time, cooler heads prevailed, and Castellanos walked to first base. Zack Wheeler went six innings with nine strikeouts.

Nationals 5, Braves 1

CJ Abrams hit his 20th home run of the season as the Nationals handed the Braves a critical loss. The Braves are now a full game back of the Mets for the final National Wild Card spot.

Yankees 4, Royals 3

On a day where Juan Soto and Aaron Judge went a combined 2-8 at the plate, Jazz Chisholm Jr. delivered a big-time moment. He hit a walk-off infield single in the 11th inning to win the series against the Royals.

Red Sox 5, Orioles 3

Tyler O’Neill’s 30th home run of the season came in walk-off fashion. He hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the tenth inning to send the Orioles on the road with a series loss.

Twins 6, Angels 4

Matt Wallner hit a home run for the second straight night as the Twins won the series against the Angels. The win officially eliminated them from postseason contention for a 10th straight season.

Cardinals 2, Reds 1

Paul Goldschmidt’s RBI double in the eighth inning got Ryan Helsley up in the bullpen. The Cardinals took a 2-1 lead on the Reds, and Helsley shut the door with his 44th save of the season. He is tied for first in saves with Guardians Emmanuel Clase.
