Joseph Contreras, Son of MLB All-Star, Announces Commitment to Vanderbilt

The Vanderbilt Commodores added to their 2026 recruiting class with a commitment from right-handed pitcher Joseph Contreras. He is the son of former Major League Baseball pitcher Jose Contreras. 

According to The Tennessean, Contreras is the number 18 player in the 2026 recruiting class. He plays high school baseball for Blessed Trinity Catholic School and is from Alpharetta, Ga.  

The Tennessean also stated that Contreras chose to commit to Vanderbilt over other great programs like Auburn and Clemson.  

At 17 years old, Contreras can already reach 93-96 miles per hour on his fastball.  

Major League Baseball Roots Run in the Family 

Joseph’s father, Jose, played in the MLB for 11 years for the New York Yankees, Chicago White Sox, Colorado Rockies, Philadelphia Phillies, and Pittsburgh Pirates. 

He finished his career with a 4.57 ERA in 1,173 innings of work. Contreras also had 889 strikeouts and faced over 5,000 batters.  

He was a part of the White Sox when they won the 2005 World Series over the Houston Astros.  

In the 2006 season with Chicago, he was named an MLB All-Star.  

Joseph Contreras and the 2026 Vanderbilt Recruiting Class 

Contreras is part of Vanderbilt’s 2026 recruiting class that ranks number one in the country according to Perfect Game.  

The class has 21 total commitments, 10 of which are ranked in the top 100.  

Other talented players in Vanderbilt’s 2026 class include left-handed pitcher Bo Holloway, shortstop Aiden Ruiz, and outfielder Eric Booth Jr.
