As the second half of the Chinese Professional Baseball League (CPBL) season continues, here is the top news and notes from last week in Taiwan’s highest level of professional baseball.
Yu Chang will not play in Premier12
Former MLB infielder and current Fubon Guardian Yu Chang will not represent Taiwan at the WBSC Premier12 Tournament this November due to injuring his finger. Chang joined the Guardians during the middle of the CPBL season. Chang hit for a .276 average, hitting ten home runs and 30 RBIs in 45 games with the Guardians. He played in the MLB from 2019 to 2023 with the Cleveland Guardians, Pittsburgh Pirates, Tampa Bay Rays, and Boston Red Sox.
Hsiao Chi and Los Angeles Dodgers Fail to Reach Agreement
It was reported in July that 18-year-old right-handed pitcher Hsiao Chi had agreed to a contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers. The deal, including the tuition allowance, was estimated to be worth $900,000. However, a deal could not be made between Hsiao and the Dodgers. More than eight teams from both MLB and NPB are actively pursuing the young pitcher.
CTBC Brothers Win Second-Half Title
On September 29, the CTBC Brothers won the second-half season title, securing a spot in the CPBL playoffs. They would defeat the Rakuten Monkeys 8-5. This is the Brothers’ 19th half-season title in their franchise history. Chen Zihao had two home runs on the night, adding four RBIs to propel the Brothers to victory.
This Date in CPBL History
On this date in 2021, the CTBC Brothers released starting pitcher Gabriel Ynoa due to family reasons. Born in La Vega, Dominican Republic, Ynoa made his MLB debut in 2016 with the New York Mets and pitched with the Baltimore Orioles in 2017 and 2019. He pitched in Japan in 2020 before joining CPBL’s CTBC Brothers in 2021. Ynoa made 12 starts in 24 appearances for the Brothers, posting a 3-3 record, a 4.01 ERA, pitching in 83 innings, and walking 16 batters while striking out 61.
