Taiwan Baseball (CPBL): News, Notes, and Where to Watch

As the second half of the 2024 Chinese Professional Baseball League (CPBL) season progresses, here is a look at the top news and notes from the last week in Taiwan’s highest level of professional baseball.

2024 Paris Olympics Bronze Medalist Throws Out First Pitch:

In a great moment, the Guardians invited bronze boxing medalist Chen Nien-Chin to throw out the first pitch before their game against the Uni-Lions on September 11. Chen Nien-Chin won bronze in the 66 kg weight class at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

NPB Scouts In Attendance For Gu Lin Reui-Yang of the Uni Lions:

According to TSNA, scouts from NBP teams such as the Hiroshima Toyo Carp and the Yokohama DeNA BayStar were in attendance for Uni Lions pitcher Gu Lin Reui-Yang. Reui-Yang is eligible to be posted this coming off-season.

The 24-year-old has been incredible for the Lions all season. In 2023, Reui-Yang pitched to a stellar 1.80 ERA. In 80 innings, he struck out 52 batters while only walking 15.

In 2024, he took an even bigger step. So far this season, he has pitched to a league-leading 1.57 ERA. In 115 innings, he has struck out 140 batters and has only walked 27.

Reui-Yang possesses incredible control, sporting a career whip of 1.155 while also having a career HR/9 of .5.

In six seasons in the CPBL, Reui-Yang has pitched to a 2.48 ERA in 374 innings. He has struck out 388 batters and walked only 112.

Rakuten Monkeys Debuted Tribute Uniforms:

On September 12, 2024, the Rakuten Monkeys played in their Atayal tribe-themed uniform to celebrate their Taiwanese Indigenous night. They went on to win 13-8!

This Date in Taiwanese Baseball History:

On September 13, 2020, CTBC Brothers slugger Chou Szu-Chi, who plans to retire at the end of the 2024 season, went 2-for-3 with a home run. Szu-Chi raised his average to .332.
