The Taiwan Series got underway last night with a sold-out crowd of over 40,000 fans ready to take in all the action at the Taipei Dome. Dominican-born left-hander Jose De Paula took the mound for the CTBC Brothers, as the U-Lions went with their ace, Gu Lin Ruei-Yang. The Brothers would win Game 1, with a 10-4 victory to take a 1-0 series lead.

The U-Lions got on the board right away in the first inning, taking a commanding 3-0 lead after the first inning. A bases-loaded walk from De Paula got the U-Lions on the board. Chen Yung Chi was credited with the RBI. While the bases remained loaded, Pan Chieh Kai grounded out to shortstop, but he was able to score Chiu Chih Cheng to increase their lead to 2-0. Hu Chin-Lung followed that up with a blooper into right field to score Chen Chieh-Hsien, increasing the U-Lions to a 3-0 lead.
The Brothers were able to strike in the bottom of the fourth, courtesy of an RBI single from Chiang Kun Yu to get them on the board. They would put up another run in the bottom of the fifth, as Wang Wei-Chen hit a deep fly ball to left field to score Yueh Cheng Hua to inch even closer, trailing by one run 3-2. After that inning concluded, the Brothers bat found some life in the sixth inning. After walks haunted the U-Lions, as a walk would tie the game, the offense came alive, and the Brothers would put up seven runs. In the eighth inning, Tseng Song En added a home run off Hu Chih Wei, adding the Brothers tenth run of the night.
Jose De Paula finished the night for the Brothers, throwing in seven innings, allowing four hits, two earned runs, two walks, and striking out five batters. As for U-Lions ace Gu Lin, Ruei Yang was limited to just three innings, allowing two hits, two walks, no runs, and striking out three batters.
Game 2 is set for Sunday, October 20, at the Taipei Dome, with the first pitch set for 5:05 AM EST. Mario Sanchez will get the start for the U-Lions, while former MLB pitcher Daniel Mengden will get the ball for the Brothers.
