On Friday, the Tennessee Volunteers defeated the Texas A&M Aggies in a run-rule 10-0. Throughout the full seven innings of the game, the Volunteers achieved their second combined no-hitter of the season. The first one this season came back on March 7 against the St. Bonaventure Bonnies.
Liam Doyle got the start for Tennessee in this national championship rematch to begin the weekend in Lindsey Nelson Stadium. The southpaw went six innings, struck out eight Texas A&M hitters, and walked just two players, all while allowing no hits.
Head coach Tony Vitello pulled Doyle after the Tennessee ace was seen messing with his finger. Dylan Loy came on to replace him in relief. He had a chance to end the game and get the no-hitter after Hunter Ensley hit a three-run home run to set up the run-rule in the seventh inning.
It took Loy only three batters as he forced two groundouts and one flyout on 12 total pitches. Thus, the Volunteers got their second no-hitter of the season as they completely shut down Texas A&M’s offense. The Aggies went 0-21 as a team, and the loss pushes head coach Michael Earley’s team below .500.
Tennessee’s pitching flexes its muscles once again as it asserts itself as one of the most dominant staffs in the country. They currently lead the nation in team ERA at 2.48
Tennessee and Texas A&M will complete a doubleheader on Saturday, April 5, to round out their weekend series in Knoxville.
