Tennessee Volunteers Make SEC Baseball History Against Belmont

On Tuesday, May 12, the Tennessee Volunteers made history during an 11-1 win over the Belmont Bruins at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.

A home run by Levi Clark in the second inning gave the Volunteers their 100th home run of the season. The Volunteers finished the game with six home runs. Their season total as a team sits at 105 with the final weekend of the regular season looming.

Tennessee became the first Southeastern Conference (SEC) program to reach 100+ home runs as a team for five straight seasons.

Impressive Power-Hitting Stretch this decade for the Vols

Dating back to the 2022 college baseball season, the Tennessee Volunteers have hit 704 home runs. The two best seasons of home run hitting during these five years are in 2022 and 2024.

In 2022, the Volunteers had 158 home runs as a team. Nine players on Tennessee’s team that season reached double figures in home runs. Tennessee’s home run leader in 2022 was Trey Lipscomb, who had 22. Lipscomb is now playing for the Rochester Red Wings, who are the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals.

In 2024, Tennessee won its first-ever national championship. During that incredible and historic season, the Volunteers hit 184 home runs as a team. That is the second-most home runs ever hit by a team in a single season.

The team with the most home runs in a season is LSU, which accomplished the major feat in 1997. The Tigers had 188 home runs that season and went on to win a second-straight national championship.

Tennessee had five players who hit 20+ home runs on that team. Those players were Blake Burke, Christian Moore, Kavares Tears, Billy Amick, and Dylan Dreiling.

Up next for Tennessee

The Tennessee Volunteers finished undefeated in midweek games this season. After the win over Belmont on Tuesday, the Volunteers are 35-18 overall and 13-14 in SEC play.

Their next game is Thursday, May 14, against the Oklahoma Sooners. The game is at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark in Oklahoma City. The ballpark is normally home to the Oklahoma City Comets, the Triple-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The first pitch for the game between Oklahoma and Tennessee on Thursday is at 7:30 p.m. ET.
