Tennessee freshman pitcher Cam Appenzeller has been a bright spot for the Volunteers during the 2026 college baseball season.
He had a phenomenal outing on Saturday, April 4, against the LSU Tigers. Appenzeller entered the game and replaced starting pitcher Tegan Kuhns. He proceeded to close out the final five innings of the contest.
Over those five innings against the Tigers, Appenzeller had six strikeouts. He allowed just one hit while allowing no walks and no runs. The relief outing was huge for the freshman as Tennessee won the game 4-1.
Appenzeller and his 2026 season with Tennessee
The win over LSU on Saturday was credited to Appenzeller. It was his fourth win of the season, and he has a 4-0 record in 2026.
Appenzeller has a 1.15 ERA in 31 1/3 innings of work. Over that same stretch, he has 35 strikeouts and has allowed an opposing batting average of .162.
One of Appenzeller’s best performances came on March 21 against the Missouri Tigers. He had seven strikeouts, walked only one batter, and gave up no runs in 4 2/3 innings of work.
Coming out of high school, Appenzeller was a top 25 player in the 2025 class according to Perfect Game. He was selected in the 19th round of the 2025 MLB Draft by the Seattle Mariners.
Up next for Tennessee
After their win on Saturday over LSU, the Tennessee Volunteers have a 20-11 overall record. They are 4-7 in Southeastern Conference (SEC) play.
They will play LSU again on Sunday, April 5, at 1 p.m. ET. The game is at Lindsey Nelson Stadium in Knoxville.
