Tennessee Volunteers catcher Garrett Wright is expected to miss three to six weeks with a hand injury, according to Vol Quest’s Eric Cain.
Wright is a junior heading into this season who transferred to Knoxville from Bowling Green.
With the Bowling Green Falcons in 2025, Wright had a .406 batting average, a .513 on-base percentage, 20 doubles, eight home runs, and 48 RBIs.
In two years with the Falcons, he is a two-time first-team All-MAC selection and two-time All-MAC defensive team selection. He was the MAC Freshman of the Year in 2024 and the MAC Defensive Player of the Year in 2025.
Josh Elander Comments on Wright’s Injury, Tennessee’s Catcher Depth
Tennessee Volunteers head coach Josh Elander spoke with Vol Quest about the incoming transfer’s injury.
“It’s just a baseball injury,” Elander stated. “It’s going to happen, especially when guys hold their bat a certain way. So, long-term, no real concerns there.”
Until Wright returns, the Volunteers have a lot of other players who can play catcher in the meantime.
Those other players who can play catcher include redshirt-sophomore Stone Lawless, as well as two incoming freshmen, Trent Grindlinger and Cash Williams.
Tennessee utility man Levi Clark is another player who can fill in the catcher position while Wright misses time.
In short, Tennessee has lots of depth at the position.
