The college baseball world was stunned as two powerhouse SEC programs—Vanderbilt and Texas, the top two overall seeds in the 64-team NCAA Tournament—were eliminated during the Regional round, both on their home turf.
No. 1 Vanderbilt, who finished fourth in the SEC with a 19-11 conference record and won the SEC Tournament with a 3-2 victory over Ole Miss, hosted the Nashville Regional at Hawkins Field. After a 4-3 win over Wright State on May 30, the Commodores fell to Louisville 3-2, then were eliminated by Wright State 5-4 on June 1. Vanderbilt finished the season 43-18 overall and 1-2 in regional play.
No. 2 Texas, in its first year as an SEC member, won the regular-season SEC title with a 22-10 conference record. They entered the NCAA Tournament at 44-12 but hadn’t reached the College World Series since 2022, despite a record 38 appearances in Omaha.
Playing at home in the Austin Regional, Texas beat Houston Christian 7-1 in the opener but dropped two games to UTSA (9-7 on May 31 and 7-4 on June 1), while also defeating Kansas State 15-8. UTSA advanced after going undefeated. Texas finished the season 44-14.
Both exits mark a shocking early end for two of the nation’s most decorated programs.
