The Texas Rangers placed Jake Burger on the injured list on Wednesday, and a day later, the team is called up Rowdy Tellez, whom they signed to a minor league contract earlier this month.
Tellez was designated for assignment by the Seattle Mariners when they recalled Luke Raley from the injured list. Tellez had started 51 games for the Mariners to that point and was slashing .208/.249/.434 with 11 home runs.
Tellez has been playing in Triple-A with the Round Rock Express after signing with the Rangers. In four games, he has gone 5-for-15. He has hit two home runs in his short stint with the team. Burger was slashing .228/.259/.401 with 11 home runs, so it’s not far-fetched to think Tellez can replicate his production.
Tellez’s best season came with the Milwaukee Brewers in 2022. He hit 35 home runs, but has not been able to maintain that level of production. He has 116 career home runs, between the Toronto Blue Jays, Brewers, Pittsburgh Pirates and Mariners. Tellez also has a home run to his name in the World Baseball Classic.
Tellez represented Mexico in the 2023 World Baseball Classic. He played very well, going 7-for-25 with one home run and five RBIs.
