The Texas State Bobcats are off to a solid 6-2 start in the 2025 college baseball season. Two of these six wins have been against some big-time opponents.
And no, we do not mean tough mid-majors. We mean top 25 power conference opponents.
On Feb. 18, the Bobcats traveled to Arlington, Texas, to take on the Oklahoma State Cowboys, who had just gotten done playing in the Shriners Children’s College Showdown in Globe Life Field.
Texas State held its ground against a great college baseball team and defeated Oklahoma State 4-2.
Despite the Cowboys getting a ton of base runners, the Bobcats’ pitching staff was able to strand 13 of them. A lot of this was due to Oklahoma State striking out 17 times.
Texas State pitchers Jesus Tovar and Bryson Dudley (who earned the win) combined for 13 of those strikeouts.
On Tuesday, the Bobcats had another big upset, which was also the biggest one in college baseball so far. The team knocked off the Texas A&M Aggies, regarded as the country’s number-one team.
Ryne Farber and Austin Eaton both hit home runs, helping the offense to a 7-3 victory. However, once again, Texas State’s high strikeout numbers helped it win.
Head coach Steven Trout used only two arms. Tovar got the mid-week start again and recorded seven strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings. Alex Valentin came in and was excellent in closing out the final 4 2/3 innings and had five strikeouts himself.
Thus, it marked another upset in the books for this Texas State team.
The Bobcats also won against Illinois this past weekend. A season ago, the Fighting Illini were the Big 10 champions.
In short, if you are one of the bigger teams in college baseball, beware when playing this Texas State team.
