The Road to Mexicali: Tomateros de Culiacan, Charros de Jalisco Advance; Tigres del Licey 4-1 In Round Robin

Liga ARCO Mexicana del Pacifico

No. 1 Tomateros de Culiacan 4, No. 8 Venados de Mazatlan 2 – Joey Meneses went 3-for-4 with a two-run homer, an RBI single and a run scored as the Tomateros eliminated Mazatlan, winning the series four games to one. Starter Manny Barreda threw five innings, allowing one run on four hits, striking out seven and walking two. Mazatlan got a run in the ninth when Culiacan closer Stephen Nogosek’s fourth ball to Jose Gaitan went to the backstop, allowing Phillip Ervin to score, but that was the last run of the year for the Venados. Two batters later, Christopher Escarrega flew out to right field to end the series.

Charros de Jalisco 4, Aguilas de Mexicali 0 – Jack Mayfield went 2-for-4 with two doubles, three RBIs, and a run scored as the Charros took the series four games to one with the shutout. Donovan Casey’s RBI double in the first drove in Jalisco’s other run. Ronald Medrano threw seven shutout innings, allowing one hit, two walks, and striking out seven to earn the win.

Naranjeros de Hermosillo 8, Yaquis de Obregon 6 (11 Innings) – Isaac Paredes’ two-run homer in the top of the ninth tied the game for Hermosillo, and then in the 11th, Luis Gonzalez’ two-run homer sent Paredes home with the go-ahead run as the Naranjeros took a 3-2 series lead. Hermosillo’s Robert Stock had a rough outing, lasting just 3 1/3 innings and allowing six runs on eight hits and three walks, but five relievers combined to allow three hits and two walks over the remaining 7 2/3 innings to secure the win.

Algodoneros de Guasave 5, Caneros de Los Mochis 0 – The Algodoneros took a 3-1 series lead behind a five-run sixth, getting RBI singles from Jesse Castillo and Yadir Drake, a two-run double from Orlando Pina, and another run on a wild pitch. Starter Jorge Perez allowed two hits and three walks over six shutout innings for Guasave.

LIDOM

Tigres del Licey (4-1) 7, Leones del Escogido (2-3) 6 – Licey jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the top of the first and added a run in each of the next two innings, before holding on for six more innings to get the win and improve to 4-1 in the LIDOM round robin. Jorge Alfaro and Gustavo Nunez each had RBI singles in the first, and Sergio Alcantara went 3-for-5 with a run scored for the Tigres. Junior Caminero went 3-for-5 for the Leones with two runs scored.

Estrellas Orientales (3-2) 3, Aguilas Cibaenas (1-4) 2 – Robinson Cano and Wilfredo Tovar had RBI singles and Jose Barrero drove in the game-winner with a sac fly in the sixth as the Estrellas improved to 3-2 in the round robin.

Liga Venezolana de Beisbol Profesional 

Bravos de Margarita (5-3) 4, Cardenales de Lara (6-1) 3 – Alexi Amarista went 2-for-4 with a run scored as the Bravos came back from a 3-1 deficit in the seventh and eighth innings to pin the first loss of the playoffs on Lara. Margarita got RBI singles from Wilson Ramos in the third and Ramon Flores and Carlos Perez in the eighth.

Aguilas del Zulia (4-3) 5, Tigres de Aragua (1-6) 0 – Ali Castillo and Andres Chaparro each went 2-for-4, with Castillo driving in a pair of runs and Chaparro driving in one and scoring two as the Aguilas soared past Aragua. Five Zulia pitchers threw a combined two-hitter, striking out 10 Tigres and walking none.
