The Tigres del Licey have taken a 1-0 lead in the Serie Final of the Liga de Béisbol Profesional de la República Dominicana (LIDOM) with a 4-3 walk-off victory against the Leones del Escogido. Sergio Alcántara brought in the winning run with a sacrifice fly.
Alcántara continued his tear in the postseason. He hit four home runs in the semifinal round. Although he did not record a hit in Game 1 of the Serie Final, he came up with two RBIs. While Alcántara came up big, the Tigres escaping a bases-loaded jam in the top of the 14th inning should not be forgotten.
Andre Pérez struck out two of three batters he faced in a bases-loaded, no-outs jam in the 14th inning. Alcántara’s sacrifice fly made him the winning pitcher. Offensively, Harold Ramírez, Christian Adames, and Francisco Mejía went a combined 7-for-13 in the game.
It was a scoring affair that stayed tied at three a piece from the fifth inning until the final run. It was the longest game played by the Tigres in a Serie Final. The previous longest game was a 13-inning loss in 1972.
Game 2 will take place on Monday night, as the Leones try to even the series. The winner will clinch their spot in the Caribbean Series. The Tigres look to complete a three-peat as champions.
