Tim Corbin and Jay Johnson Match Up in Nashville as Vanderbilt Takes on LSU

This weekend, Southeastern Conference (SEC) play begins in Nashville as the Vanderbilt Commodores will host the LSU Tigers. Head coaches Tim Corbin and Jay Johnson will face each other to begin league play.

Both coaches boast huge resumes and are the only two active head coaches with multiple national championships.

A look at Tim Corbin’s Coaching Career

Corbin began coaching at Vanderbilt in 2003. He has won 964 games as the head coach of the Commodores and won two national titles with the team in 2014 and 2019.

Corbin has also won his fair share of SEC hardware. He is a three-time SEC Coach of the Year, has won four SEC regular-season titles, and has also won four SEC Tournament titles.

Corbin led Vanderbilt to the SEC Tournament title last season, and the team was the number one overall national seed in the NCAA Tournament.

Including his two national titles, Corbin has led Vanderbilt to the College World Series five times. He has also led the Commodores to the NCAA Tournament 20 times, which includes 19 consecutive trips dating back to 2006.

A Look at Jay Johnson’s Coaching Career

Johnson became LSU’s head coach in 2022 and instantly got the Tigers back to their standard of winning national championships.

The Tigers are the reigning national champions under Johnson, as they won the College World Series in 2025. Johnson also led LSU to the national championship in his second season in 2023.

In those same two national title-winning seasons, Johnson won the National Coach of the Year award.

The LSU head coach has also been in the College World Series prior to being in Baton Rouge. He led the Arizona Wildcats to Omaha in 2016 and 2021 as well.

Since becoming the Tigers’ head coach, Johnson has amassed 190 wins.

Up next for Vanderbilt and LSU

The Vanderbilt Commodores and LSU Tigers begin their weekend series on Friday, March 13. The game is at Hawkins Field in Nashville, and the first pitch is at 7 p.m. EST.
