Williamsport has been the premier destination for little league baseball teams worldwide for over 75 years. The list below outlines the most successful countries in the history of the Little League World Series.
Mexico has a rich history at Williamsport. In 1957, Monterrey, Mexico, became the first international team ever to win the Little League World Series title. They also went on to win the 1958 LLWS title, making Mexico one of five countries to be a repeat champion. Mexico’s third and final title came in 1997. Although Mexico has not had much success in the LLWS since 1997, they gave other countries the belief that they could also compete against the American powerhouse teams.
South Korea is tied with Mexico with three Little League World Series Titles. South Korea is ranked higher on this list than Mexico because they have won a LLWS title more recently. South Korea’s last LLWS title came in 2014 over Chicago, Illinois. South Korea’s other two titles came in 1984 and 1985. Since 2016, South Korea has also made two LLWS finals and recently has been a perennial international contender at Williamsport.
Japan’s most popular sport is baseball, and this is shown by its success at Williamsport. Japan has won 11 Little League World Series titles, claiming its first title in 1967. However, Japan has been extremely dominant in the past 20 years. From 2010 to 2017, Japan won five LLWS titles. As baseball continues to become increasingly popular in Japan, it is fair to assume that they will find even more success at Williamsport.
Baseball is commonly considered the national sport of Taiwan. The Taiwan Little League teams have historically represented their country extremely well, winning 17 Little League World Series titles. Although Taiwan has not had success at Williamsport recently, not winning a title since 1996, it does claim one of the most dominant runs in the history of the LLWS, winning 17 titles from 1969 to 1996.
The United States of America has far and away the most Little League World Series Titles of all time, with 39. The United States has recently dominated the tournament, winning the last five. Although impressive, much of the United States’ success can be credited to the tournament’s structure. Because the United States teams compete against each other in the group stages and the elimination stages until the final, this means that a team for the United States is in the final every year. The success of the United States teams in the LLWS is still extremely impressive, but it is worth questioning if the tournament format is fair to international teams.
