Travis Bazzana has had quite a few highs during the last year. From the number one overall pick to the minor league playoffs, he’s done it all.
He’s played on some of the biggest collegiate stages, leading his alma mater, Oregon State, to the Super Regional less than four months ago. Not to mention, he was drafted first overall out of Australia in this past year’s draft after a historic season in Corvallis.
But almost 30 games into his professional career in High-A, Bazzana was yet to have a signature moment — A clip for fans to watch as they await his future Guardians debut.
Just 14 innings into the playoffs, that void has clearly been filled. Bazzana lined a go-ahead single in the Lake County Captains 5-4 series-clinching win over the Dayton Dragons.
His reaction says it all, the hit was massive, and looks to be a driving force to a successful end of the season for the second baseman.
Bazzana — who slashed .238/.369/.765 over 101 High-A at-bats — also roped a home run in the fifth inning of the Captains’ win. Just one inning later, the 22-year-old Australian singled in the go-ahead run on a 0-2 pitch with two outs in the inning.
Bazzana had previously confirmed his intention to represent Australia in the WBSC Premier12. However, it looks like the Captains’ championship aspirations may run longer.
With Captains’ series sweep, they will move on to face the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (Milwaukee affiliate) in a best-of-three series — only setting the stage for more Bazzana heroics when the stakes are at their highest.
