Travis Bazzana, the number one pick in the 2024 MLB draft, makes his professional baseball debut tonight. The Cleveland Guardians selected Bazzana on July 14, 2024, and he will start for the Guardians’ Class-A affiliate, Lake County Captains.
Bazzana became the first Australian-born player to be selected number one overall in the MLB draft almost two weeks ago. Born Aug. 28, 2002, in Sydney, Australia, Bazzana played baseball in the Australian Baseball League before committing to Oregon State.
He played three years for the Beavers in the Pac-12, winning the 2024 Pac-12 Player of the Year while playing second base. Bazzana signed his rookie deal with the Guardians for 8,950,000 and will begin his time in the farm system.
The Captains are currently 56-36 and face the Great Lakes Loons at 7:05 p.m. ET at Dow Diamond Stadium. The 21-year-old Bazzana looks to carry his momentum from Oregon State and the draft to Michigan in hopes of climbing up the minor leagues safely and quickly.
