As the second week of the regular season for the Liga Venezolana de Béisbol Profesional (LVBP) progresses, here is a look at the top news and notes from the beginning of the week in Winter League Baseball.
Pablo Aliendo Out for Three to Six Weeks with Fracture
The Navegantes del Magallanes suffered a major blow on offense when their catcher went down with a fracture to his right hand in their matchup against the Tigres de Aragua on Sunday.
Pablo Aliendo will be out of commission for at least three to six weeks after being struck in the right hand by the Tigres right-hander Christian Mejías. Aliendo, 23, remained in the game after being hit-by-pitch, but the Navegantes press department confirmed the severity of the injury on Monday afternoon.
Following the news, the Navegantes stated that Aliendo will undergo consistent radiological examinations to monitor the injury. Still, at best, he is expected to be out for at least three weeks.
Pablo Aliendo planned to play the full winter season with Magallanes, but he will be a free agent after the World Series. He is listed as the thirteenth-best prospect for the Chicago Cubs.
The Cardenales Cruise Past the Leones in an 18-2 Blowout
The Cardenales de Lara absolutely dominated the Leones del Caracas in their match on Tuesday, scoring 18 runs and earning their second win in three games.
Each player in the Cardenales lineup had at least one hit against Leones pitching, with Robert Perez Jr. hitting a pair of doubles and combining with Jermaine Palacios to drive in four runs each.
The Leones loaded the bases twice in the game and had seven hits but could not capitalize on the runners in scoring position as only two crossed the plate.
