Venezuelan Baseball (LVBP): News, Notes, and Where to Watch

As the fifth week of the regular season for the Liga Venezolana de Béisbol Profesional (LVBP) progresses, here is a look at the top news and notes from the beginning of the week in Winter League Baseball.

Tiburones break a three-game losing streak with their victory over the Caribes

On Tuesday, the Tiburones de la Guaira broke a three-game losing streak with a 12-8 victory over the Caribes de Anzoategui. The offensive onslaught was led by Luis Matos, who had six plate appearances with a double, a triple, and a home run, just one single away from hitting for the cycle.

The Tiburones kicked off the game by knocking in four runs off Caribes starting pitcher Mauricio Llovera, coming from an RBI hit by Wilson Garcia and a three-run home run from Yangervis Solarte.

In the fourth inning, Alcides Escobar hit a sacrifice fly, and Luis Matos doubled, scoring Roberto Alvarez and Yhoswar Garcia to tack on two more runs. Six more runs were scored between the sixth and seventh innings off the bats of Luis Matos, Wilson Garcia, and Yasiel Puig.

The Caribes tried to keep up, scoring eight runs off of 20 hits, but it wasn’t enough. After a hot 8th inning where the Caribes put up three runs, they ultimately fell short as their bats fell silent in the 9th.

The Tigres de Aragua add Collin Wiles to their Pitching Staff

The Tigres de Aragua bolstered their starting rotation with the signing of Collin Wiles, a 30-year-old American with experience in Major League Baseball and LIDOM. He was the first pick of the Texas Rangers in the 2012 MLB Draft. Additionally, in the 2021-2022 winter league season, Wiles played for the Tigres del Licey in the Dominican Republic and is ready to help the Tigres de Aragua succeed in the Liga Venezolana de Béisbol Profesional.

Collin Wiles’ time in Major League Baseball back in the United States did not last long. In 2022, he played only four games for the Oakland Athletics. In those appearances, he posted a 4.66 ERA with nine strikeouts and two walks over 9.2 innings. He finished his 2024 season in an independent league, playing for the Kansas City Monarchs and posting a 3.48 ERA over five starts.

Damage sustained from weather at Jose Bernardo Perez Stadium causes Aguilas-Magallanes game to be suspended

Heavy rain began to fall during the Aguilas del Zulia v. Navegantes del Magallanes game on Tuesday. The torrential downpour caused the game to be suspended to a later date, as some of the lighting towers at the Jose Bernardo Perez Stadium failed due to damage to the power supply.

The damage sustained to the field was severe enough that there was no way the game could be continued. The last play of the game was a home run by Carlos Rodriguez off of Aguilas pitcher Sterling Sharp. The score remains 1-0, with no word from the LVBP on when the match will be rescheduled.

LVBP Standings as of November 6:

  1. Tiburones de La Guaira (13-8)
  2. Bravos de Margarita (12-9)
  3. Tigres de Aragua (11-9)
  4. Navegantes del Magallanes (10-10)
  5. Cardenales de Lara (9-10)
  6. Águilas del Zulia (9-10)
  7. Leones del Caracas (7-11)
