 Anthony DiPonio - World Baseball Network  |    Nov 12th, 2024 6:00pm EST

As the sixth week of the regular season for the Liga Venezolana de Béisbol Profesional (LVBP) progresses, here is a look at the top news and notes from the beginning of the week in Winter League Baseball.

The Tigres de Aragua Acquire Luis Sardiñas via trade with the Caribes

31-year-old shortstop Luis Sardiñas was traded from the Caribes de Anzoategui to the Tigres de Aragua on Monday afternoon in exchange for pitcher Riskiel Tineo and utility player Ángel Aguilar. Over Sardiñas’ 11 seasons in the Liga Venezolana de Béisbol Profesional, he has posted a .280 batting average with 369 hits, 75 doubles, eight triples, 26 home runs, 191 RBIs, and 177 runs scored in 1,316 lifetime at-bats. Sardiñas spent seven years of his LVBP career with the Caribes de Anzoategui and four years with the Tiburones de La Guaira.

The Tigres are looking to bolster their offense by acquiring Sardiñas, who so far in the 2024-2025 season has a batting average of .266 with 17 hits, two doubles, three home runs, eight RBIs, and ten runs scored over 64 at-bats.

In exchange for Sardiñas, the Caribes have received 21-year-old right-handed pitcher Riskiel Tineo, who has been looking promising on the bump. During his time in the minor league system for the Miami Marlins this year, Tineo pitched 35 innings with 28 strikeouts for an ERA of 3.86. So far this season, he has pitched in five relief appearances for the Tigres without letting up any runs. The Caribes have also received Ángel Aguilar, who, in 12 games with the Tigres, had three home runs, 10 RBIs, a .669 OPS, and a .207 batting average.

Magallanes are the Champions of the Clash of the Giants

The Navegantes del Magallanes became the first champions of the Clash of the Giants tournament at loanDepot Park in Miami, Florida, this past Sunday with a 4-3 intense victory. The friendly competition between teams from Venezuela, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic ended in dramatic fashion with a clutch game-winning two-run home run coming off the bat of American Jacob Rhinesmith.

Having previously faced and surmounted the Leones del Caracas of the LVBP and the Estrellas Orientales of the LIDOM, the final obstacle in the Navegantes way of the championship was the Criollos de Caguas of the LBPRC. Miguel Pabón and Onix Vega opened the scoring for the Criollos in the second inning to put them ahead early in the game. The Navegantes responded in the seventh inning with a double to left-field by Carlos Rodriguez, scoring Tito Polo and Luis Suisbel to tie the game.

After the championship game went into extra innings, Jacob Rhinesmith came up to the plate with the Navegantes behind 3-2 in the tenth inning and the tying run on second base. After seeing three pitches go by without swinging, Rhinesmith blasted a fastball over the right field fence, walking off the game for the Navegantes 4-3 in a thrilling victory.

The Navegantes del Magallanes will return to Venezuela after being crowned Clash of the Giants Champions. They currently sit fourth in the LVBP standings, behind the Bravos, Tiburones, and Aguilas.
